Understanding Your HMO: What It Covers at PMC
Your HMO card can do more than you think — but many Nigerians leave benefits unused because they don't know what's included. Here's how to get the most out of your health insurance at Promise Medical Centre.
Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) are one of the most underutilised benefits in Nigeria. Many employees have HMO cards through their employers but only use them during emergencies — missing out on preventive care, specialist consultations, and diagnostic services that are covered.
Promise Medical Centre is registered with over 20 HMOs across Nigeria. This guide explains how to use your card effectively.
What Is Typically Covered?
Coverage varies by your HMO plan and employer, but most standard plans include the following at a registered facility like PMC:
- General practitioner (GP) consultations — the most used benefit
- Specialist referrals — when your GP refers you to a cardiologist, paediatrician, or surgeon
- Basic laboratory tests — blood count, blood glucose, cholesterol, kidney and liver function
- Basic radiology — X-rays, certain ultrasound scans
- Prescribed medications from the HMO formulary (approved drug list)
- Antenatal care visits (varies by plan)
- Emergency care in covered facilities
- Certain surgical procedures (requires pre-authorisation in most cases)
What Is Often NOT Covered
- Private ward or luxury room upgrades
- Cosmetic or elective procedures
- Medications not on the HMO formulary (you pay the difference)
- Specialist care without a GP referral (some HMOs require referral letters)
- Certain advanced diagnostics like MRI or CT scan without pre-authorisation
- Dental and optical care (unless your plan specifically includes it)
